Claude Cowork and chat are now one Claude: you no longer choose where a task goes

Anthropic announced on September 16, 2026 that Claude Cowork and chat are merging into one Claude. Until now you picked a place for each task: chat for a quick question, Cowork for bigger work that needed files, connectors and a longer run. That choice disappears. You bring the task, and Claude decides what it needs: a short answer, or a multi-step job that keeps running after you have closed your laptop.

Why Anthropic did this. In its own words, Cowork was built as a separate place for bigger work, and Claude Design for visual work. People used both, and told Anthropic that the frustrating part was deciding where a task belonged. What they had started in one place also did not carry into the other. So the choice is gone: everything Cowork and Design can do is now available from any conversation, with the context, skills and connectors you already have.

Docs, Slides and Design live inside the conversation. Claude Docs and Claude Slides are new as of today, and Claude Design now works inside conversations too. Ask for a document, and you and Claude write it together. Ask for a presentation, and Claude drafts the slides. You can edit directly, present straight from Claude, or download as PowerPoint or PDF. Anything you make with Design, Slides or Docs lives at one shareable link that opens on your phone; you can select an element and move it, or tell Claude what to change. All three are in beta on paid plans, Enterprise admins choose when to turn them on, and Claude Design used on its own keeps working as before.

What it looks like in practice. Anthropic's example: a weekly report is due at noon. Before you leave the house you ask Claude what moved in the pipeline last week, then add: write it the way we always do, flag anything that slipped, and put the highlights in five slides for the leadership meeting. If something is unclear, Claude asks. You check progress from your phone on the way in. At your desk, the report is waiting as a doc with notes from a teammate, and the slides are ready to open, adjust and download as PowerPoint. Because both came out of the same conversation, the slides already match the report. Schedule it for every Monday and Claude starts the report without being asked.

You decide how Claude checks in. By default Claude asks before taking an action. If you would rather let it keep working and check in only when something needs a closer look, you can turn that on. Either way you keep the final say, which is the same trade-off Cowork users already know from its permission settings.

Rollout and what to do. If you mostly use chat, nothing changes in how you work; the difference shows the next time you hand over a report or deck you would normally build yourself. If you have been working in Cowork, everything is where you left it: chats, projects, artifacts, connectors and skills. The merged experience reaches Pro and Max first, in the Claude app on web, desktop and mobile over the coming weeks, for existing and new users. There is nothing to turn on. Team and Free plans follow soon, and Enterprise admins hear from Anthropic at least 30 days before anything changes for their organization. What this means for readers of this site. Cowork stops being a separate destination, but what it does stays: files, connectors, skills, scheduled tasks and long-running work all carry over into the single Claude. Everything we describe about working with Cowork, from skills and connectors to permission settings, keeps applying; you just no longer switch surfaces to use it. Organizations on Team or Enterprise see no change yet, so there is no need to adjust training or internal guidance before the rollout reaches your plan.
